McGinnis was the first sophomore to lead the Big Ten in both scoring and rebounds during his 1970–71 season at Indiana.

The news that McGinnis would be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017 alongside Tracy McGrady, Bill Self, and Rebecca Lobo was released on April 1, 2017. September 8 was his induction date.

During his final years, McGinnis’s health deteriorated mostly as a result of back issues that necessitated several surgeries. At the age of 73, he passed away from cardiac issues at a hospital in Indianapolis on December 14, 2023.
