About The Leeds Festival

The Leeds Festival, also known as the Leeds Triennial Musical Festival, is a classical music festival that was held between 1858 and 1985 in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England.

The first festival celebration took place in 1858, to commemorate Queen Victoria’s dedication of Leeds Town Hall.

Up until 1970, the event was conducted every three years after the second one in 1874.

The principal conductor of the festival was Sir Arthur Sullivan, with King George V and a couple of other royals serving as patron.

Princess Mary, her son, George Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood, and his wife, the Countess of Harewood, also used to be participants.

The first performance by the Northern Philharmonic Orchestra at the Leeds Festival took place in 1937, and the final Leeds Triennial Musical Festival took place in 1985.

Since gaining its independence in 1976, the Leeds Festival Chorus has continued to perform, broadcast, and record music.
