In 2022, investigative journalist Josh Baker retraced Begum’s path through Turkey and discovered a vast ISIS people smuggling network that facilitated her journey to Syria. He also received hundreds of pages of secret files on the smuggler, which revealed that Mohammed Rashed, the man at the heart of the network, was conducting an intelligence operation. Rashed was a Canadian asset, according to a serving senior intelligence officer.
