According to reports, police in Athens-Clarke County responded to a gunshot complaint shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday night.

Townley and a 30-year-old woman were shot and sent to a local hospital, where Townley succumbed to his injuries. The injuries sustained by the victim were characterized as severe.
A police investigation is presently underway, with the victim’s acquaintance, a 32-year-old Dunwoody male, being implicated in the case. The killing appears to be linked to domestic violence, according to preliminary findings.

John Wes Townley, a former NASCAR driver who competed in the Xfinity and Camping World Truck Series from 2008 to 2016, was killed in a double homicide in Athens’ Five Points neighborhood on Saturday. He was 31 years old at the time.
