In a period when sound technology was still developing, Varda’s work used location shooting. This meant that instead of filming outside, films were more frequently shot indoors using prefabricated sets and painted landscape backdrops.
Ninety-year-old Varda passed away in Paris on March 29, 2019, due to cancer. On April 2, her funeral took place at Montparnasse Cemetery.

How did Agnes Varda make money?
Either I put films in the photos or photos in the films.” Varda discussed her early beginnings with the medium of still photography:
“I started earning a living from photography straight away, taking trivial photographs of families and weddings to make money. But I immediately wanted more and that’s what led to what I called ‘compositions.’
