The NLC took legal action against the unions at the Accra High Court after attempts to persuade them to return to work failed. The court’s ruling on Thursday, March 28, prohibits the unions from persisting with their strike.
The teacher unions, which include the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), commenced a nationwide strike on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
They accused the government of neglecting their working conditions, such as withholding salaries, altering timetables without consulting them, and delaying the distribution of laptops.

Isaac Owusu, the National President of GNAT, highlighted concerns about the distribution of laptops to teachers and changes to school calendars. He emphasized the need for negotiations and proper procedures regarding teachers’ salaries.
Despite the NLC’s directive to reverse their decision, the unions persisted with the strike, prompting legal action. The court’s ruling bars them from continuing the strike.
This development underscores the ongoing dispute between the teacher unions and the government regarding their grievances.
