Helen Zille born Otta Helene Maree was born in  Hillbrow, Johannesburg in South Africa on March 9, 1951.

Zille had her high school education in St Mary’s School, Waverley, an all-girls school, and went further to study at the University of the Witwatersrand, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Zille is a former journalist and anti-apartheid activist and was one of the journalists who exposed the cover-up around the death of Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko in the late 1970s.
