Speaking at a National Dialogue on State Police organized by the House of Representatives, Jonathan stressed that empowering each state with its own police force is crucial for enhancing security and ensuring a prompt response to local security issues.

He highlighted that the implementation of State Police would allow for a more localized approach to law enforcement, better equipped to address the unique security concerns faced by individual states.

Jonathan referenced the 2014 National Conference, which during his administration, endorsed the creation of state police.

Jonathan asserted that debating the necessity of state police is unnecessary, as it is imperative for managing internal security effectively.

He urged a focus on devising mechanisms to prevent abuses by state political actors and ensure the independence of the police force from political influence.

Furthermore, Jonathan emphasized the need to revamp the Independent National Electoral Commission to prevent the misuse of state police for political gain.

He believes that with the establishment of state police, the incidence of kidnapping and other criminal activities can be significantly reduced.

Jonathan regretted that the opportunity to establish state police was not seized during his tenure as President and Commander-in-Chief. He urged swift action to implement this vital reform for the betterment of Nigeria’s security landscape.
