The Golden State Warriors have waived guard Chris Paul, announcing the move ahead of the June 30 2024, deadline that would have guaranteed his $30 million salary for the season.

With this decision, Paul now enters free agency without restrictions.

Paul, a veteran of 12 NBA All-Star appearances, embraced a new role coming off the bench for the first time in his career last season with the Warriors. Despite his reduced minutes, he contributed 9.2 points and 6.8 assists per game.

Acquired last summer in exchange for Jordan Poole, Paul’s departure represents a strategic salary adjustment for the Warriors. Initially exploring trade possibilities, the team opted to waive him when no viable deals emerged.

In addition to shedding Paul’s salary, the Warriors face uncertainty with star player Klay Thompson, who is also entering free agency.

Thompson, a cornerstone of the team for over a decade, appears increasingly likely to explore options beyond Golden State.

The team currently has $147.2 million committed in salaries for next season, positioning them with flexibility to pursue free agents using the midlevel and biannual exceptions.

Thompson’s potential departure marks a significant transition for the Warriors, as discussions with multiple teams including the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Philadelphia 76ers are set to unfold rapidly in free agency.

Despite reported interest from various teams, Thompson remains open to considering compelling offers.

The Warriors, now navigating both Paul’s departure and Thompson’s impending decision, look ahead to a transformative offseason in their pursuit of roster refinement and competitive readiness for the upcoming NBA season.
