Giltrap Group founder Sir Colin Giltrap dies at 84

Sir Colin Giltrap, the founder of the esteemed Giltrap Group renowned for its focus on luxury cars and his notable contributions to motorsport, has passed away at the age of 84.

Giltrap Group confirmed his peaceful passing surrounded by his family on April 17, 2024.

Although he had distanced himself from the business following a fall in London last year, the Giltrap name remained synonymous with the motor vehicle industry.

Today, the Giltrap Group website pays tribute to its founder with the poignant inscription, “Sir Colin Giltrap 1940-2024.”

Sir Colin laid the foundation for his business in the 1960s by acquiring Matamata Motors, subsequently expanding its reach into Auckland with the purchase of Coutts of Great North Road.

His early exposure to the machinery business through his father, coupled with his passion for cars during his student days, fueled his entrepreneurial journey.

Over the years, the Giltrap Group secured dealership rights for prestigious brands like Daimler, Audi, Triumph, Porsche, and Rover, alongside a significant presence in mid-range car sales.

The company’s history is adorned with partnerships with some of the most prominent car manufacturers.

In recent times, Sir Colin had entrusted the management of the group to his sons Michael and Richard, allowing the legacy to continue under family stewardship.

Beyond his entrepreneurial pursuits, Sir Colin and his wife Lady Jennifer were actively involved in philanthropy, notably supporting the Starship Foundation from its inception and sponsoring Symphony in the Park.

The Giltrap Group expressed in a statement that Sir Colin was revered for his ability to forge lasting relationships, his unwavering commitment to people, and his indelible impact on the automotive industry and motorsport, which earned him legendary status.
