The Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) is set to stage a demonstration on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, to protest the recent imposition of a five percent excise tax on locally manufactured plastic products.

Ebow Botwe, President of the GPMA, announced that the demonstration will kick off at Kwame Nkrumah Avenue, proceed through Accra Technical University, and culminate at the Ministry of Finance.
The demonstration aims to express the association’s dissatisfaction with the tax implementation, which they argue will adversely affect their industry.

Earlier in June, the GPMA issued a stern warning that they would suspend production for a week if their demand for extensive consultations with the Ministry of Finance regarding the new tax was not addressed.
They had sent a letter to the Ministry in April 2024, seeking a meeting to discuss the implications of the tax and propose alternative measures, but claimed to have received no response.
The association represents manufacturers across Ghana who produce a wide range of plastic products essential for various sectors of the economy.
They argue that the sudden imposition of the excise tax without adequate consultation could disrupt operations and lead to unintended consequences for businesses and consumers alike.
