McGinnis became the first sophomore to lead the Big Ten in both scoring and rebounds during his 1970–71 season at Indiana.
The announcement that McGinnis would be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017 alongside Tracy McGrady, Bill Self, and Rebecca Lobo was made on April 1, 2017. On September 8, he was inducted.

During his final years, McGinnis’s health deteriorated mostly as a result of back issues that necessitated numerous surgery. On December 14, 2023, he passed away at the age of 73 from cardiac problems in a hospital in Indianapolis.
