Now serving as Los Angeles County’s district attorney is American lawyer and former police officer George Gascón. From 2011 to 2019, Gascón, a Democrat and former Republican, was San Francisco’s district attorney.

In 1978, Gascón became a patrol officer with the Los Angeles Police Department. He returned to work in business management following a three-year tenure with the LAPD.

Gascón applied to be the Chief of Police of the Los Angeles Police Department in 2002. To lower the recidivism rate among California’s jail population, he wished to collaborate with community organizations. In the end, Chief of Police William Bratton was chosen.
