George Chigova Obituary

The football world mourns the untimely passing of former Zimbabwean goalkeeper, George Chigova, affectionately known as “Zikeeper,” who tragically left us on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at the age of 32.

Early Life and Career:

George Chigova’s story began on the football pitches of Zimbabwe, where he developed his skills and passion for the beautiful game. Starting his professional career with Gunners, he quickly caught the eye with his commanding presence in the goal. His talent soon earned him a move to Dynamos, a club where he further honed his skills and solidified his reputation as a formidable goalkeeper.

International Stardom:

Chigova’s exceptional talent did not go unnoticed on the international stage. Representing Zimbabwe on 30 occasions, he showcased his skills at prestigious tournaments, including the African Cup of Nations. His dedication and performances in the national team jersey earned him the respect and admiration of fans and fellow players alike.

Club Journey:

The journey of “Zikeeper” extended beyond the borders of Zimbabwe. In 2014, Chigova made a significant move to SuperSport United, a South African football club, under the guidance of coach Gavin Hunt. Unfortunately, his time at SuperSport was interrupted by a serious health condition that forced him to take a break from the sport. Despite the setbacks, Chigova displayed remarkable resilience, returning to training after recovering from a heart attack.

Later, he played for Polokwane City before making a return to SuperSport United in 2020.

Tragic Turn of Events:

The football community was devastated when news broke of George Chigova’s sudden collapse after returning to training. This heartbreaking event occurred just months after the passing of former national team player and head coach Rahman Gumbo, compounding the grief within Zimbabwean football circles.

Gavin Hunt, SuperSport coach, had initially provided a medical update four months ago, indicating a serious health condition for the towering goalkeeper. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, George Chigova succumbed to the complications, leaving a void in the hearts of fans, teammates, and the football fraternity.
