Geoffrey Oryema is a Ugandan musician who is very popular in the 1970s for his songs in multiple languages such as Swahili, Acholi, English, and French. Geoffrey Oryema was born on 16 April 1953 at Soroti in Uganda.

Geoffrey Oryema came to the limelight of the media when he released his second album, “Beat the Border” which was celebrated all over the world. Geoffrey Oryema had teamed up with Peter Gabriel and others, and was supported by French performers including Jean-Pierre Alarcen (guitar) and Patrick Buchmann (drums, percussion, backing vocals), visiting with WOMAD in Australia, the USA, Japan, Brazil and Europe.

In 1994, Geoffrey Oryema’s band performed at the Woodstock 94 celebration on the 25th anniversary of the festival. Geoffrey’s songs has gained international recognitions and has won many awards. Geoffrey moved from Ugandan to France after his father was murdered in 1977 during the rule of Idi Amin. He stayed at France for 40 years before moving back to Uganda. Geoffrey’s Ashes was returned to his hometown, “Anaka land” when he died.
