Galarrwuy Yunupingu AM, a well-known Aboriginal Australian campaigner, and leader, died on April 3, 2023. He dedicated his life to fighting for Indigenous land rights.

He was also known as James Galarrwuy Yunupingu and Dr. Yunupingu. He rose to prominence in the Aboriginal Australian community as a member of the Yolngu Gumatj tribe from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.
The lead singer of the Aboriginal group Yothu Yindi, Mandawuy Yunupingu, was Yunupingu’s younger brother. The group recorded the popular song “Treaty” in June 1991 to honor the Barunga Declaration.

The brothers and the band used their platform to spread awareness of the issue by using the song to emphasize the lack of progress on the treaty between Aboriginal peoples and the federal government.
Galarrwuy Yunupingu AM will be regarded as a leader who committed his life to the pursuit of justice and equity for Aboriginal Australians and a fervent supporter of Indigenous land rights.

One of the producers of the Australian coming-of-age movie “Yolngu Boy” from 2001 was Galarrwuy Yunupingu. Stephen Maxwell Johnson served as the director, and Patricia Edgar, Gordon Glenn, Galarrwuy Yunupingu, and Mandawuy Yunupingu served as producers.
In addition to his work as a producer, Galarrwuy Yunupingu voiced the song “Bayini” in 2009 and made an appearance as himself in the documentary “Oh My God.”
Galarrwuy Yunupingu Family
Galarrwuy Yunupingu was born into a family of ten children, including his sisters Nyapanyapa Yunupingu and Nancy Gaymala Yunupingu, as well as his brother Mandawuy Yunupingu.
His nephew Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, a well-known Indigenous Australian musician, is another noteworthy family member. Although Djalu Gurruwiwi is referred to as a relative in some texts, it is unclear how they are related to Galarrwuy Yunupingu.
Galarrwuy Yunupingu Education
In his early years, Galarrwuy Yunupingu attended Mission School in Yirrkala. After spending two years in Brisbane studying at the Methodist Bible College, he returned back to Gove in 1967.
Galarrwuy Yunupingu Health and Death
Galarrwuy Yunupingu was hospitalized in January 2010 after passing out in a bank in Nhulunbuy. He underwent a kidney transplant in late 2016.
After a protracted illness, Yunupingu passed away in the Northern Territory on April 3, 2023, at the age of 74. He was dubbed “a giant of the country” by the Yothu Yindi Foundation.
