The Ghanaian government is gearing up to introduce the Free Senior High School (SHS) Bill to Parliament, aiming to regulate and ensure the sustainability of the flagship educational policy.

This move comes in response to growing concerns over the potential cancellation of the policy by future administrations and the various challenges encountered in its implementation.

One of the key considerations in the proposed bill is the suggestion put forward by stakeholders, including EduWatch, advocating for parents who choose boarding facilities for their children to cover associated fees. This recommendation aims to alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with the policy while ensuring its long-term viability.

Furthermore, EduWatch has proposed that the Free SHS policy should prioritize children from disadvantaged backgrounds, utilizing data from the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program as a reference point. This targeted approach seeks to address inequalities in access to education and support vulnerable households.
During a Leaders’ Media Briefing on Tuesday, June 11, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin revealed the government’s intention to present the Free SHS Bill to Parliament. He emphasized that the bill aims to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of the policy, aligning with the principles outlined in Chapter 5 of the Constitution.
