At a recent event in Abeokuta, former President Olusegun Obasanjo reflected on his time in office, stating that his leadership period was among the best Nigeria has experienced.

Speaking at the Safe Online Youth Fellowship Bootcamp, which was backed by Meta and held at the Youth Development Centre of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, he highlighted significant accomplishments from his tenure between 1999 and 2007.

Obasanjo emphasized his efforts to liberate Nigeria from heavy debt burdens. He expressed satisfaction with the ongoing celebration of 25 years of continuous democracy that began with his election in 1999.

He shared that upon taking office, he aimed to secure debt relief due to the annual $3.5 billion debt servicing costs that were not reducing the overall debt.
Obasanjo proudly noted that he left Nigeria in a better economic state than he found it, reducing the country’s debt significantly from $36 billion to $3.6 billion and increasing reserves from $3.7 billion to over $50 billion, along with creating an excess crude account valued at over $25 billion.
