Former Maine Governor Joseph E. Brennan dead at 89

Former Maine Governor Joseph E. Brennan has passed away at the age of 89. Brennan, a Democrat who served as governor from 1979 to 1987, died at his home in Munjoy Hill on April 6, 2024.

Throughout his distinguished career, Brennan held various positions in public service, including serving as Cumberland County District Attorney, a legislator in the Maine House and Senate, and as Maine’s Attorney General.

He later served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and was also a member of the Federal Maritime Commission.

Governor Janet Mills remembered Brennan as a man of integrity and principles, shaped by his upbringing in Portland’s Munjoy Hill neighborhood.

She praised his commitment to hard work, fairness, and friendship, highlighting his pivotal role in promoting gender equality by appointing her as Maine’s first woman District Attorney.

Former Governor John Baldacci recalled Brennan’s dedication to making Maine a better place, emphasizing his integrity and genuine concern for the welfare of Maine’s families.

Democratic Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, who succeeded Brennan in her current seat, described him as one of Maine’s greatest Governors, noting his strong commitment to social justice, economic equality, and environmental protection.

Brennan’s legacy is marked by his philosophy that “every one counts,” reflecting his dedication to serving the people of Maine. Governor Mills extended her deepest condolences to Brennan’s wife Connie, his children, J.B. and Tara, and the entire Brennan family on behalf of the people of Maine.
