According to the police, Edwards is accused of possessing six category A images, the most serious classification, along with 12 category B and 19 category C images. A conviction could result in a substantial prison sentence.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) defines “making indecent images” as including activities such as downloading or receiving such images, even if unsolicited.

Edwards, who left the BBC in April, was formerly the network’s top news anchor and frequently covered major national events. The CPS has advised media and the public to avoid publishing anything that could prejudice the ongoing case.
