This announcement was made by Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, the Head of the Federation’s civil service, during a media briefing in Abuja on June 19, part of the 2024 Civil Service Week.
Dr. Yemi-Esan explained that through physical verification by various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), the civil service workforce was reduced from over 100,000 to 69,308 verified employees.
Besides uncovering fake employees, the verification also found some civil servants who had moved abroad for better opportunities.
These individuals returned for verification weeks later and claimed they were unaware of the schedule.

They were given an additional two weeks to complete their verification but many resigned instead, as their foreign employers would not allow extra time for this process.
Dr. Yemi-Esan mentioned ongoing efforts to combat corruption in the public service, in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
She highlighted the strides made in digitizing and improving the efficiency of the Federal Civil Service, with a goal of full digital transformation by the end of 2025.
She noted that all MDAs are progressing in this digitalization mandate, ensuring better service delivery to Nigerians.
