Edita Gruberová had her theatrical debut in Bratislava in 1968 as Rosina in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, but the following year she successfully auditioned for the Vienna State Opera, which became her home.
Edita Gruberová achieved international acclaim in parts like as Mozart’s Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte and Richard Strauss’s Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos.
Later in her career, she took on larger parts in the Italian bel canto repertory, including the title role in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Elvira in Bellini’s I puritani, and Elisabetta in Roberto Devereux.

In 2019, she played Elizabeth I, who abdicates her kingdom, bringing to a close a 51-year theatrical career in which she played starring parts. She is known as the “Slowakische Nachtigal”.
