Acknowledging his engaging personality and distinctive linguistic style, the organization recalled how van Agt had a remarkable ability to remember the names of individuals who had worked with him long ago. They expressed their admiration for him as a friend and inspiration, affirming their commitment to continuing his mission.

The Rights Forum, the organization founded by van Agt, revealed that a brain hemorrhage in 2019 had significantly impacted his functioning, leaving him frustrated with his diminished creativity, concentration, and ability to deliver impassioned speeches. Over time, he gradually retreated from public life, recognizing that he had entered the final phase of his journey.

As van Agt’s health declined, so did that of his wife, Eugenie, with whom he shared a relationship spanning more than 70 years. Despite their challenges, van Agt continued to affectionately refer to her as “my girl.”

Their final moments were poignant as they departed this world simultaneously, hand in hand, marking the end of an era for the beloved couple.
