Juan “Chi Chi” Rodríguez, a legendary Puerto Rican professional golfer, passed away on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at the age of 88.

Rodríguez’s death was announced by Carmelo Javier Ríos, a senator from his native Puerto Rico, though the cause of death was not disclosed.
Rodríguez was the father to Donnette Rodríguez, the daughter of his wife Iwalani from her previous marriage.
He is survived by his daughter, Donnette Markham, as well as his brothers Jesus and Julio, and his sisters Juanita, Carmen, and Maria.
Rodríguez’s life was marked by his dedication to helping others, a passion inspired by a brief yet profound encounter with Mother Teresa, which he regarded as the greatest moment of his life.

Motivated by this experience, Rodríguez co-founded the Chi-Chi Rodríguez Youth Foundation alongside former professional golfer Bill Hayes and Bob James.
This afterschool program, located at the Glen Oaks Golf Course in Clearwater, Florida, aimed to build self-esteem in young people who were victims of abuse, had minor legal troubles, or had faced other hardships.
Beyond his philanthropic efforts, Rodríguez also demonstrated his deep commitment to family by buying his mother a house and providing financial support to his brothers and sisters.
