Scott Bloomquist, a legendary figure in late model dirt racing, tragically passed away at the age of 60 in a plane crash near his home in Mooresburg, Tennessee.

The crash occurred on Friday, August 16, 2024, when his vintage single-engine Piper J-3 plane crashed into a barn around 7:50 a.m.
The aircraft, which belonged to Bloomquist, went down on his family farm. The devastating news was confirmed by family friend Reid Millard, speaking on behalf of Bloomquist’s mother, Georgie, as well as Hawkins County Mayor Mark DeWitte.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are currently investigating the incident.
Bloomquist’s racing career was nothing short of extraordinary. He won nine national championships and amassed over 600 victories in various touring series since his debut in 1980.
His remarkable achievements earned him an induction into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame in 2002.

The racing world was united in mourning the loss of one of its most iconic figures. Tony Stewart, a four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, described Bloomquist as “one of a kind” and “the smartest guy I’ve ever been around when it comes to dirt racing.”
Stewart praised Bloomquist’s ingenuity in building race cars and his commanding presence on and off the track.
Former NASCAR driver Clint Bowyer also expressed his sorrow, saying, “Sad to hear of the passing of Scott Bloomquist. The stories are endless! You simply couldn’t fit his life into just one movie, it’ll take a series.”
Scott Bloomquist leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered by racing enthusiasts for generations to come.
