SSC Napoli have renamed their stadium after Diego Maradona following the death of the Argentine legend.
Diego Maradona, aged 60, died last month after a heart attack. He led Napoli to two Italian Serie A titles, thus in 1987 and 1990.
The stadium, formerly known as the Stadio San Paolo will now be known as the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. The new name was approved by the Napoli City Council.
The change of the name of the stadium in honor of Maradona was proposed by Napoli owner, Aurelio de Laurentiis via an open letter which was also backed by the Mayor of Naples, Luigi de Magistris.
Diego Maradona’s career at Napoli lasted for 7 years after he joined the Italian club from Barcelona in 1984. He also led Napoli to victories in the 1987 Coppa Italia as well as the 1989 UEFA Super Cup.
Maradona made 188 appearances for Napoli (the most appearances for a club he has amassed) and scored 81 goals.
