Salman Ramadan Abedi, a 22-year-old British Muslim of Libyan ancestry, was the bomber. He was born in Manchester to a Salafi family of Libyan-born exiles who had relocated to south Manchester after fleeing Muammar Gaddafi’s dictatorship. He was the youngest of three siblings, with two brothers and a sister.
He was born and raised in the Whalley Range district of Fallowfield. Neighbours described the Abedi family as “very pious” and “traditional.” Before 2011, Abedi, his older brother, and his father used to go to Didsbury Mosque. Abedi went to Burnage Academy for Boys, Wellacre Technology College, and The Manchester College.

Abedi was described by a former tutor as “a very slow, illiterate, and passive individual.” According to The New York Times, Abedi was one of a group of pupils at his high school who accused a teacher of Islamophobia of questioning them about suicide bombers. He also reportedly told his friends that being a suicide bomber “was ok,” prompting worry from fellow college students.
