Frances and Diana were not in talking terms before Diana died. She had made resentful statements to her daughter that made her vow never to speak to her again.

Who Was Frances Shand Kydd?

Frances was Diana’s Mother. The two women had quarrelled in 1997, after she told the media that her daughter was happy to relinquish her “Royal Highness” title, after her divorce from Prince Charles.

Frances had married John Spencer, Viscount Althorp (later the 8th Earl Spencer), at Westminster Abbey, and they had five children together, but her marriage was not a happy one.

She later divorced John Spencer and married Peter Shand Kydd, an heir to a wallpaper fortune in Australia. But Kydd later left her for a younger woman.

After the death of Diana in 1997, Frances converted to Roman Catholic and devoted her life to charity and philanthropic works.

She was involved with the Handicapped Children’s Trust, the Royal National Mission for Deep Sea Fishermen, the Mallaig and Northwest Fishermen’s Association, and the National Search and Rescue Dogs Association.

Frances died on June 3, 2004, in her home in Scotland, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and brain cancer.
