Did Fernando Valenzuela make the Hall of Fame? Why is Fernando Valenzuela not in the Hall of Fame? – Fernando Valenzuela is a former professional baseball pitcher who played 17 Major League Baseball (MLB) seasons, from 1980 to 1991 and 1993 to 1997. Despite his achievements in the sport, including a no-hitter and a Cy Young Award, he has not been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Below are some reasons explaining his omission from the Hall of Fame:

  • Valenzuela did not receive enough votes from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. He first appeared on the ballot in 2003 and received 6.2% of the vote, surpassing the 5% threshold to remain in consideration for another year. However, his vote percentage dropped to 3.8% in 2004, and he fell off the ballot, rendering his chances for induction remote.

  • Valenzuela’s career statistics, while impressive, may not be enough to meet the Hall of Fame’s criteria for induction. His career highlights include a win-loss record of 173–153, with an earned run average (ERA) of 3.54. While these numbers are good, they may not be enough to meet the Hall of Fame’s standards for induction.
  • Valenzuela’s cultural significance and popularity among Mexican-American fans may not be enough to sway Hall of Fame voters. While Valenzuela is widely regarded as a cultural icon in Los Angeles, particularly among the Mexican-American community, his popularity may not be enough to overcome the Hall of Fame’s strict criteria for induction.

Despite his omission from the Baseball Hall of Fame, he was inducted into the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame on August 23, 2003. In 2005, he was also named one of three starting pitchers on MLB’s Latino Legends Team.
