Sportscaster Richard John Vitale, better known as “Dickie V,” was born in the United States on June 9, 1939. He was a former head coach in both the collegiate and professional levels and is well recognized for his 41-year run as an ESPN college basketball analyst.

His catchphrases, like “This is amazing, baby!” and “diaper dandy” (excellent freshmen player), as well as his animated and humorous comments made during games, have made him famous. In addition, he has written nine books and acted in a number of movies. In 1958, Vitale accepted his first coaching position at a Garfield, New Jersey, primary school. He eventually made the transition to the high school level and spent one season as the head coach at Garfield High School before moving on to East Rutherford High School.

In Garfield, New Jersey, Vitale and his brother John Vitale were raised. Scotty Connal handed Vitale his first TV opportunity at the then-new ESPN cable network after he left his position as coach of the Detroit Pistons. His initial response to the broadcasting job was, “Absolutely no way. I have no TV knowledge. I wish to return to the place where my spirit and I belong.
