Officials said David Amess, a conservative British member of Parliament, died Friday after being stabbed numerous times.

Amess, 69, represented the Essex constituency of Southend West.
According to Sky News, he was attacked while having his monthly “meet and greet” with voters at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea.
The attack’s motivation is unknown.
A man was hurt when Essex Police responded to allegations of a stabbing soon after 12:05 p.m. local time.

According to police, a 25-year-old male was detained on suspicion of murder following the stabbing, and a knife was discovered at the site. There are no additional suspects in the event, according to authorities.

Amess was first elected to the House of Commons in 1983. His wife Julia and five children survive him.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a video statement, “I think all our hearts are full of shock and deep sadness today … He was one of the kindest, nicest, most gentle people in politics.”
