From 2007 until 2015, American attorney Craig Marcus Watkins served as Dallas County’s district attorney. When he was chosen in 2006, he became Texas’s first elected African-American district attorney.

Before entering private practice, Watkins worked as an attorney in the Dallas County Public Defender’s and City Attorney’s offices.
Watkins belonged to the Dallas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, and the National Trial Lawyers Association.
Three kids were born to Watkins and Tanya. On December 12, 2023, at the age of 56, he passed away at home in Dallas.

Craig Wakins, the former Dallas County District Attorney who is best known for rebuilding trust in the office through his Conviction Integrity Unit and for targeting sex offenders for prosecution, has died at the age of 56.
Watkins’s death on Tuesday was confirmed by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office, though his cause of death has not been provided.
