The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has expressed strong disapproval of President Akufo-Addo’s recent remarks during the Founders’ Day address.

On August 3, President Akufo-Addo stated that Ghana’s founding should not be attributed to a single individual, emphasizing that the independence struggle was a collective effort.
The CPP, which honors Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as Ghana’s founding father, criticized these comments as an “unfortunate gaffe.”
They argued that, on a day meant to celebrate Ghana’s founder, the president should have chosen his words more carefully. This criticism was outlined in a press release by Patrick Nelson Sogbodjor, the chairperson of the party’s Independent Committee, issued on August 4.

The CPP’s statement suggested that the current administration should focus on leaving a positive legacy rather than diminishing the contributions of a leader cherished by both Ghana and Africa.
They accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of distorting historical facts, pointing out a recent error where President Akufo-Addo mistakenly referred to former President John Dramani Mahama as his vice president.
The release reaffirmed that Dr. Nkrumah, also known as Osagyefo, is globally recognized as Ghana’s founder. It criticized attempts by earlier political figures to prevent Ghana’s independence and accused the NPP of misrepresenting history.
