Former Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, faced a setback in his legal battle against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed his bid to quash N4 billion theft charges on Thursday.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, presiding over the case, rejected Obiano’s preliminary objection challenging the EFCC’s authority to prosecute him. However, the court granted Obiano’s request for the release of his passport to undergo a medical trip.

While adjourning the trial until June 27, Justice Ekwo ordered Obiano to return his passport to the court upon his return from the medical trip.

Obiano, arraigned on January 24, faces nine counts related to the alleged misappropriation of Anambra State security votes amounting to N4 billion.

In his defence, Obiano, through his lawyer Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), argued that the EFCC lacked the jurisdiction to prosecute him, urging the court to dismiss the charges as an abuse of the legal process.
