Mata, who recently left Japanese side Vissel Kobe after the 2023/24 season, is currently in Sweden with his family. With Nordsjaelland also in Sweden for their pre-season preparations, Mata has taken the opportunity to stay fit by training with the Danish club.

The 36-year-old midfielder will be under the guidance of former Chelsea teammate Michael Essien, who now serves as an assistant coach at the club. This setup will see the two reunite on the training ground, following their successful stint together at Chelsea, where they won both the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

A statement from Nordsjaelland confirmed, “Juan Mata will be training with our Super League squad in Farum. Given that he is married to a Swede and his family resides in Malmø, this opportunity is perfect for him to stay in shape.”

Phil Radley, Nordsjaelland’s Director of Football, added, “Juan Mata has expressed a desire to train with us while in Sweden. As a friend and co-founder of the Common Goal charity, which FC Nordsjaelland is a member of, we are pleased to accommodate his request. His presence will be beneficial for our young squad, providing invaluable experience and insights.”

Essien and Mata’s reunion is a promising development, with both looking to bring their experience and expertise to Nordsjaelland.
