Charlie Smithgall was a politician, pharmacist, and businessman from the United States. Smithgall attended J. P. McCaskey High School in Lancaster and graduated in 1963.

In 1968, he earned a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, now known as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.
Smithgall was mayor of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for two terms, beginning in January 1998 and ending on January 3, 2006. Smithgall, a Republican, was defeated in his bid for a third term in 2005 by Democrat Rick Gray.

Smithgall had a hands-on approach to running City Hall and he got things done but occasionally irritated City Council members.
Charlie Smithgall passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2022. He was 77. His wife, Debbie Smithgall, confirmed his death and stated that he died at 3:30 a.m. at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. She stated that her husband was suffering from heart problems.
