Carlo Paalam was born on July 16, 1998, in Bukidnon, Philippines but spent most of his childhood time in Balingoan, Misamis Oriental. His parents divorced when he was just six years old.

Carlo Paalam was scouted by local officials in 2009 after figuring in the Boxing at the Park tournament and was placed under Cagayan de Oro’s boxing training program. He then joined the Philippine national team in 2013 and started competing at the international level.
