He attended Austin-East High School in Knoxville, where he actively participated in multiple sports. Despite receiving athletic scholarship offers from various Division I schools, Torbush chose to walk on at the University of Tennessee, setting the stage for his remarkable career in the sports arena.

In addition to his professional achievements, Carl Torbush had a large and loving family that played a significant role in his life. His family included his wife Janet Torbush, son Trey Torbush, parents Carl William Torbush Sr. and Mary Torbush, and siblings Bill Torbush and Mary Torbush. A Battle with ALS

In 2017, Carl Torbush retired from coaching after being diagnosed with ALS, a challenging and progressive neurodegenerative disease.
