Wilfried Nathan Douala, purportedly a seventeen-year-old footballer from Cameroon, grabbed headlines as the youngest player at the AFCON tournament.

His selection, however, sparked skepticism due to his lack of experience and doubts surrounding his age.
Despite being praised as “the most mature 17-year-old in the world,” Douala never took the field for the national team and was absent from match-day squads throughout the tournament.
His inclusion faced further scrutiny when he faced suspension for identity falsification.

French newspaper Le Monde reportedly unveiled Douala’s true identity by noting his resemblance to Alexandre Bardelli, a 21-year-old player from Oryx football club in Cameroon.

The two bore striking physical similarities and shared tattoos, fueling suspicions of a connection.
Although efforts to reach Douala’s mother shed limited light on the matter, with hints of nicknames and acknowledgment of a mere “resemblance” between the individuals, the Cameroonian federation remained silent despite prior contact from Le Monde.
Now, the Confederation of African Football may launch an investigation into potential fraud or identity theft, raising the possibility of Cameroon’s exclusion from forthcoming AFCON tournaments.
