Buddy, whose real name was Michael C. Stathis, was born in Queens, New York. He often got into trouble with the law and was even homeless in 2013, according to a story about him on SSENSE. Before he started acting in the movie Heaven Knows What by Josh and Benny Safdie, Buddy told SSENSE that he had “just come out of Rikers [Island]… for a drug charge” when he met Josh. At that time, he was running away because he didn’t want to go to a drug treatment program.
“In my head, it was like, as long as I can, I’m gonna be on the run and enjoy summer, and evade the authorities,” he said. “And when they catch me, I’ll take it like a man.”
