British swimmer Archie Goodburn, 23, has shared heartbreaking news of his diagnosis with incurable brain cancer, revealing the presence of three large tumors known as oligodendrogliomas.

These tumors, classified as a rare form of diffuse and progressive brain cancer, are inoperable and were discovered following tests conducted after this year’s Olympic trials.

Goodburn, who previously won bronze in the men’s 50m breaststroke at the 2019 World Junior Swimming Championships and represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games, made the announcement through a heartfelt post on Instagram.

“Six weeks ago, my life experienced a profound change as I was diagnosed with three brain tumors,” Goodburn wrote, reflecting on the sudden turn of events that began with unusual symptoms late last year.

Initially dismissed as migraines, these symptoms escalated into seizures, causing a loss of strength and numbness on his left side.

Despite these challenges, Goodburn remained determined to pursue his athletic dreams, pushing through training sessions even as the seizures intensified in the months leading up to the 2024 Olympic trials in April.

“I narrowly missed the Olympic team by just a few tenths of a second, placing third in an event with only two spots,” he recounted.

After the trials, Goodburn intensified efforts to uncover the cause of his health setbacks, culminating in an MRI scan in May that confirmed his worst fears.

“While surgery was not an option, I am hopeful that radiotherapy and chemotherapy will be effective,” Goodburn stated optimistically, pointing out that oligodendrogliomas generally respond better to these treatments compared to other types of brain tumors. “They are often slow-growing, and these tumors are likely years old,” he added.

Despite the daunting diagnosis, Goodburn emphasized his determination to face the challenges ahead with positivity. “I am young, I am fit, and I have the most phenomenal support network of friends, the best family I could ever hope for, and a fantastic girlfriend by my side,” he affirmed.
