Bongani Mayosi was the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town.
Bongani Mayosi was a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa and a former President of the College of Physicians of South Africa.
In 2017, Bongani Mayosi was elected to the US National Academy of Medicine. Bongani Moyasi was also part of the team which discovered one of the gene mutations responsible for causing the life-threatening heart disease arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia, a discovery regarded as one of the most important medical advances in South Africa since the first human heart transplant.
Bongani Mayosi served as the chairperson of the team appointed by the South African Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi to investigate irregularities and maladministration at The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), the organisation which registers, regulates and guides health professionals.

Bongani Mayosi was also very instrumental in creating a system that sought to train the next generation of physician-scientists; a vision that included training 1000 of them across South Africa every year.
During his lifetime, Bongani Mayosi published over 300 peer-reviewed academic articles individually and collectively, including a collaboration with highly sought after researchers such as Salim Yusuf.

Bongani Mayosi Foundation
The Bongani Mayosi Foundation was established in honor of Professor Bongani Mayosi. The Bongani Mayosi Foundation is a legacy project aimed at acknowledging and celebrating the vision, impact and influence of the late Professor Mayosi on the health sciences academic endeavours and students of UCT.
Bongani Mayosi Scholarship
The Bongani Moyasi Scholarship was established by the University of Kwazulu-Natal through the Netcare’sHealth Partners for Life (“HPFL”) initiative in honor of the late Professor Bongani Mayosi.
Bongani Mayosi Death
Bongani Mayosi died by suicide on 27 July 2018. Bongani Mayosi had been experiencing depression for two years.
Eight months before Bongani Mayosi’s death, he tendered his resignation to the University of Cape Town, which was declined.
