Boeing has finalized a guilty plea to a criminal fraud conspiracy charge and agreed to pay at least $243.6 million, following allegations that it breached a 2021 agreement with the U.S. Justice Department.

The plea deal comes after Boeing was found to have allowed potentially risky work at its factories and failed to maintain accurate records, violating the 2021 deferred prosecution agreement.

This agreement had shielded the company from criminal prosecution related to its previous misconduct.

The Justice Department revealed that Boeing made false representations about key software for the 737 MAX, which contributed to two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people.

The company had initially agreed in July 024 to plead guilty to conspiring to defraud the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

In a statement on Wednesday, 24 July 2024, Boeing confirmed the plea agreement and pledged to enhance its safety, quality, and compliance programs. The company emphasized its commitment to working transparently with regulators.

The Justice Department’s findings, made in May, noted that Boeing had breached its obligations under the 2021 agreement, which came into effect after a January incident involving a 737 MAX in-flight panel blowout. This incident exposed ongoing safety and quality issues at Boeing.
