Coastguards in Mauritania have tragically recovered the bodies of 89 migrants from a capsized boat in the Atlantic Ocean, following a devastating incident that unfolded on Monday, July 1 2024.

The vessel, described as a traditional fishing boat, departed last week from the Senegalese-Gambian border area with approximately 170 people onboard.
Survivors reported that the boat capsized off Mauritania’s south-western coast, leading to the loss of dozens of lives. Nine individuals, including a five-year-old girl, were rescued from the water.
Mauritania serves as a crucial transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe from West Africa, with thousands embarking on perilous journeys across the Atlantic each year.
The treacherous route often leads to Spain’s Canary Islands, a sought-after destination for those seeking refuge and better opportunities.

Last year alone, nearly 40,000 migrants successfully reached the Canary Islands, marking a significant increase from previous years, according to data from the Spanish government.
In their desperation to reach Europe, migrants frequently board overloaded and unsafe boats, risking their lives on the turbulent waters.
The humanitarian toll is severe, with estimates from the charity Ca-minando Fronteras indicating that over 5,000 migrants lost their lives attempting the sea crossing to Spain in the first five months of 2024 alone.
To address the ongoing crisis, the European Union recently granted Mauritania €210 million in aid, with a substantial portion allocated to combatting undocumented migration.
This initiative aims to enhance border security and provide support for migrants in transit, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated efforts to prevent further tragedies at sea.
