African most decorated rapper, Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, became the first-ever artiste to win the Black Entertainment Television Hip Hop Awards, Best International Flow Act category in 2019.

The 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards was held at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Georgia, United States and hosted by American actor and comedian, Lil Duval.

The category of the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards saw some notable names on the African continent in competition for the ultimate first awards but it seemed easy for Sarkodie as he was the fans favourite to win it.

Ghetts from the United Kingdom, Falz the Bad Guy, from Nigeria, Nasty C, from South Africa, Kalash from France, Little Simz from the UK and Sarkodie from Ghana were grouped to compete for the awards but the King of rap music won it for Ghana.


In his acceptance speech, Sarkodie dedicated it to his firstborn, Titi, thanked Akon who saw his dream and encouraged people to take a trip to Ghana when they decide to visit Africa as Ghana mark the Year of Return.

Ahead of the BET Hip Hop Awards 2020, BET has picked the best four acceptance speeches during the 2019 Awards, and of course, Sarkodie’s speech though they did not rank it from first to fourth Sarkodie’s Speech was the third on the website.

Below is an excerpt from the BET’s Sarkodie’s speech.



Ghana’s Sarkodie kept it real with his to-the-point acceptance speech for the Best International Award. He started off by calling the audience beautiful people and then dedicating the award to his daughter that he loves very much. After that though, he thanked Akon for everything that he’s done for Africa as a whole. “Akon saw the dream,” he said. “I encourage each of you to take a trip to Africa and come have fun. If you come, choose Ghana. You know what time it is.
