Bawumia Pledges Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disabilities if Elected President

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, leader of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to ensure free tertiary education for university students with disabilities across the country.

Speaking during a meeting with religious leaders in the Western North Region as part of his nationwide tour, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his government’s commitment to prioritizing scholarships for individuals with disabilities.

He clarified that while scholarships are available to all, special attention will be given to those with disabilities.

Starting from 2025, the scholarship program will cover both academic fees and accommodation costs for eligible students.

Dr. Bawumia expressed his firm dedication to supporting individuals with disabilities, allocating additional funds to the scholarship secretariat and the GET Fund to make tertiary education accessible to all.

He stated, “We are giving scholarships to every person but I am going to dedicate some of the monies to our scholarship secretariat and the GET Fund to provide free tertiary education; both tuition and accommodation to every person with a disability who makes it into the university so they can all benefit.”

Dr. Bawumia, serving as Ghana’s 5th Vice President in the 4th Republic, assumed office on January 7, 2017, as Vice President of the nation.
