Barbara-Rose Collins was born on April 13, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan. Collins was an American politician from the U.S. state of Michigan and the first black woman from Michigan to be elected to Congress.

Collins graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology, the study of humanity through the application of biology, cultural studies, archaeology, linguistics, and other social sciences.

Collins sponsored several bills that were later passed into laws. Some of the notable bills include the Food Dating Bill, the Sex Education Bill, and the Pregnancy Insurance Bill.

Collins was a vital member of the Democratic political party.

Collins died of the coronavirus, a contagious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in a hospital located in Detroit, Michigan, U.S. on November 4, 2021.  Collins died at the age of 82.
