Former U.S. President Barack Obama has weighed in on the recent presidential debate between incumbent President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, held on Thursday night, June 27.

During the debate, Biden, the Democratic candidate, appeared to freeze at several points and was often seen mumbling and tripping over phrases.

In a reaction that has garnered significant attention, Obama acknowledged Biden’s lackluster performance but urged voters to continue supporting him over Trump. “Bad debate nights happen,” Obama, 62, posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Trust me, I know.”

Obama’s candid response didn’t stop at critiquing the debate performance. He emphasized the broader stakes of the election, framing it as a choice between two very different candidates. “This election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself,” Obama insisted. “Between someone who tells the truth; who knows right from wrong and will give it to the American people straight — and someone who lies through his teeth for his own benefit.”

“Last night didn’t change that, and it’s why so much is at stake in November,” Obama concluded, urging voters to consider the long-term implications of their decision.

Adding to the discourse, former President Bill Clinton also shared his thoughts on the debate.

On Friday afternoon, Clinton highlighted Biden’s achievements during his tenure, emphasizing the contrast between Biden’s and Trump’s records.

“I’ll leave the debate rating to the pundits,” Clinton said. “Joe Biden has given us 3 years of solid leadership, steadying us after the pandemic, creating a record number of new jobs, making real progress solving the climate crisis, and launching a successful effort in reducing inflation, all while pulling us out of the quagmire Donald Trump left us in.”
