James announced the death of his father on X in a post that reads:
“This is James, Arthur’s son, writing on behalf of the Burns family. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Arthur died peacefully in his sleep at home, with his loved ones close by. He had been ill for the past three years, but faced his cancer with enormous courage and stoicism.”
There is no further information on James.
However, his father was a respected scholar who specialized in the history of English religion since the mid-eighteenth century, particularly the history of the Church of England.

He was also the co-founder and co-editor of the Boydell and Brewer monograph series Studies in Modern British Religious History.
He received his undergraduate degree and doctorate from Balliol College, Oxford, and was a fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
He served as Vice President (Education) of the Royal Historical Society from 2012 to 2016, overseeing policy on the teaching of History in both schools and universities.
He was also appointed academic director of the Georgian Papers Programme at King’s College London in 2017.
He was a prolific author and published several books and articles throughout his career.
His notable publications include The Diocesan Revival in the Church of England, c. 1800–1870, Rethinking the Age of Reform: Britain, 1780–1850, and St Paul’s: The Cathedral Church of London, 604–2004.
