Reflecting on her experiences as an openly transgender woman in Ghana, Maxine described it as a constant struggle.
She faced discrimination and limitations in her daily life, from walking on the streets to performing at venues, all because of her identity.
Despite these challenges, she remains hopeful for a future where LGBTQ individuals can live openly and contribute positively to society in Ghana.

Maxine’s decision comes amidst the backdrop of the approval of an anti-LGBT+ bill by the Ghanaian parliament, which aims to criminalize LGBT+ activities in the country.
The bill awaits the president’s approval, pending a Supreme Court ruling on its constitutionality.
Maxine, known as the first openly transgender Ghanaian musician, has been using her platform to advocate for LGBTQ rights through her music.
Her latest single, “Prep,” released in November 2022, addresses the importance of HIV prevention medication. Additionally, her song “Kill The Bill” serves as a campaign against the new anti-LGBT bill in Ghana.
